I have the LS-15 and use the Direct input for my DAC and the Balanced input for my phono stage. I can't say that I hear a big difference. Obviously you receive some advantges in gain when using balanced. Theoretically balanced makes a difference in very long cable runs.

LS15 is worth around $1500. SP17 has a bit warmer sound, a little quieter and a bit more layered soundstage. LS17 is more a reference neutral preamp with more frequency extension on the bass and treble, more attack, lower noise, bigger soundstage. Quite a bit better than the LS15. It took over one year and four different brands of pre-amps to audition, including the ARC LS-20, to arrive at a decision. Overall the LS-15 beat the socks off the Levinsons, Krells, etc. For the price there, in my opinion, is no better line stage amplifier in terms of musicality, presentation and macro-micro dynamics.
