If the LS-1 is anything like the 2, tube rolling could make a difference. I don't know what tube is in your amp now, but to my ears an ECC288 like a Philips or Siemens will make a big improvement. Perhaps you can fiddle around with tubes a bit before getting rid of the AR. Satch, Apr 18, 2008. #2.

The LS1 is one of the best sounding preamps in stock form. With an upgrade similar to the upgrade of the Audio Research SP9 MKIII and a NOS Telefunken 6922 tube this preamp sounds amazing. (The SP9 MKII and the LS1 have the exact same line stage only the SP9 MKII has an added phono stage and when upgraded to the MKIII also sounds awesome).

Audio Research LS1 [Expired] Nice preamp that was recapped and gone over at the factory about 4 years ago. They installed an NOS JAN 6DJ8 at that time, optimizing the preamp for that tube. Unit comes with another NOS JAN (from AR), a Telefunken E88CC from Upscale Audio, and a Sovtek 6922. Everything functions perfectly.

I owned the unit for one year and up- graded to the Audio Research LS-16 about a month ago. At 1st comparsion with an Aragon pre-Amp during listening trials to match to my Aragon 8008B Dual Mono Amp, the Audio Research LS-9 was more balance and sweet for Martin Logan SL-3 speakers, therefore I bought it.
