I selected the Audio Research D130 after the amp I was originally going to listen to (VT60) was out on loan by the dealer, so he suggested I try this instead. The D130 complements the rest of the system beautifully (Theta Pearl/ProGeny, ARC LS8 and ProAc Response 2.5) This was what was needed to bring everything alive.

This discussion. Message User. 5 posts. 11-21-2004 7:23pm. Edit. Delete. I have a D240MKII and it sounds fantastic. I haven't heard a D130 so I can't comment on that. The D240MKII has plenty of power and if it presents any coloration it is slightly towards the warm side of …

Audio Research has produced some of the finest components for music reproduction; this is especially true with regard to preamplifiers. In 1973, the SP3 was hailed as the best preamplifier available, and this tradition of excellence has continued ever since. Good to read you are getting on well with this fine audio. The SP 17 is a great pre-amplifier and to better it convincingly you may need a box with the word Ref in front. Not saying the LS27/28 are not better but for a real move forward then a Ref. will show it. The D130 power amplifier is also a good one.

So far all I can say is "wow". This big beast from January 1972 sounds just great. A different sound from my Sansui 8080, Marantz 1060 and Audio Research LS9. I also have a Marantz 240 amp and a Audio Research D130 amp. A few weeks will tell but I just might keep the AU-999 and sell everything else.

Jeff, These are all discontinued amplifiers, but I think there are a few Audio Research models that are worth considering: 100.2, D200/300/400 and the D130. The 100.2 (100W @ 8, 200W@4, 1998-2003) is among the best solid state amplifers I've heard in recent history- clean, dynamic, great imaging, natural timbre and detail.
