The CD8 has a new power supply. Which the CD7 can be retro-fitted to real close. ARC tells me it's a rather large sonic improvement. But the DAC in the CD8 is totally new. The CD7 can not be retrofitted with the new DAC. I'll report here once I get my CD7 upgrade back from ARC, next week. lula 194 posts 11-22-2008 9:42am

While CD7 was louder and heavier in midbass, CD8 had a better control, faster and deeper (and probably lower) bass definition. So compared to CD8, CD7 sounded darker. On the other hand, CD8 did not have a tonal preference. The CD7 unit we tested did not have upgraded power supply kit.

I used to have a CD 5, I heard the CD7 but not in direct comparison. I did think the CD 7 sound less digital though. I had the opportunity to compare the CD 5 with a borrowed dCS Puccini + u clock and although the dCS was more detailed did not feel it was what I wanted which was something to encourage me to listen to digital as much as vinyl.
