That and the fact that for the last few months I have been living with the Audio Research Reference 7 CD player, a machine that has very gently and seductively worked its way under my skin. No startling revelations, just a player that has considerably widened the channels between my CD collection and the desire to listen to the music within it.

The Reference CD7’s sound is just a touch more natural and harmonically rich than the Esoteric UX3-SE’s. I heard a bit more warmth and palpability with stringed instruments, which made them sound more "analog" than "digital." Images had more bloom through the CD7, and just felt a bit more like live music.

Barrelchief, here is small review of CD7. Biggest suprise for me was REF CD7 bass! It is very deep and nicely defined for tube unit! This player has very good PRAT, which is good for tube based unit. Whole presentation is powerful but, not with forward soundstage. Midrange is creamy, with excellent definition, specially on male vocals.

To my ears the CD7 has a strong midrange presence that makes instruments sound more full-bodied. I actually like it a lot on classical music. Other players give a thinner sounding presentation, which is why the CD7 might sound thick in comparison.

The machine is a top-loader like all previous Audio Research CDPs with a tube-based output stage. It employs the 6N30P tubes I am very familiar with from the Ancient Audio and Loit Passeri decks. The 6N30P is a dual triode originally made in the Soviet Union, now Russia.
