The Reference 3 line-stage preamplifier ($9995) was introduced at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show, replacing the long-running Reference 2 Mk.II. The Ref.3 is not an update or a minor revision; the Reference preamp has been redesigned from the ground up, and Ref.2 Mk.IIs cannot be updated or retrofitted to Ref.3 status.

Preview, from Vol.3 No.3: We thought Audio Research's previous-model SP-2C (footnote 1) was excellent, but this is even better—the closest thing available, in fact, to the ideal straight wire with gain. Well to be specific, although the bass on the REF 3 is very good, my listening panel and I found that the additon of the tube dampers on the 6550 and 6h30 that control the power supply, made the bass tighter, more refined, and with more resolution.

I am looking to add a Audio Research preamp. Looking at the Ref. 3,5,5se. The 5se is a bit high in price. I have a Wadia S7i CDP up front with Pass Labs XA100.8 amps. I am using Vandersteen Quarto Wood CT speakers. Witch Audio Research would make the best sense to go with. Thanks for the help Russ.
