Audio or linear taper pots? What’s the difference ...

    https://www.hoaglandcustom.com/2017/05/15/hello-world/
The taper of a pot affects HOW the volume or tone is increased or decreased. We prefer linear taper pots in the tone position for the control that they give you. A slight bump in a linear taper pot will give you a slight signal increase. …

Do you use audio or linear pots for tone? - Gelvin Guitars

    https://rocksolidpickups.com/2021/11/26/do-you-use-audio-or-linear-pots-for-tone/
Volume pots should be linear and tone should be audio taper. Most people suggest the opposite because they are confusing an amplified circuit with an RC circuit. The tone of your guitar is not an amplifier circuit where an audio taper would come into play. It is a capacitor resistor circuit. The two are different and should be treated as such.

I'm the opposite, I like Linear for the volume & audio taper for tone. I do have Linear tone controls on my SG & can live with (too lazy to change them out). I like Linear volume controls (with humbuckers) so the roll off isn't all crowded in the 7-10 range, giving finer control over how hard I'm hitting the front of the amp.

AFAIK tone pots should be linear taper. Audio taper is logarithmic with fast, coarse adjustment at one end and slow, very fine at the other. Linear taper pots should roll off the highs in an even, more controllable way. I'm wondering because a number of vendors recommend their CTS audio taper pots for both volume and tone.

Audio or linear taper for tone pot? | TalkBass.com

    https://www.talkbass.com/threads/audio-or-linear-taper-for-tone-pot.1388709/
An audio taper pot makes the function of the Tone control more linear; it flattens out the curve, as you hear it. That's why they make audio taper pots. A linear taper pot in a passive Tone control circuit makes the operation of the circuit uneven, gradually increasing.

audio or linear taper for tone | My Les Paul Forum

    https://www.mylespaul.com/threads/audio-or-linear-taper-for-tone.11166/
I think the most standard is to use audio taper for volume and linear for tone. It all depends on what effect you want the tone control to have on your tone, and what way you are going to use it. A lot of people really like using logarithmic pots for tone on les pauls because PAF style pickups and vintage caps tend to not have a lot of treble in the circuit.

Tone Pot: Linear or Audio Taper? - Electric Guitars ...

The volume control, certainly with passive circuits, should be linear. Going from 10 to 9 should be a 10% reduction, not 26%. The tone control is a different deal. It works as a combination of resistance (the pot) and capacitance (that pesky cap). That is not a linear function and using a audio taper pot gives a smoother response curve.

Audio Taper vs. Linear Taper (whats what) and Cap ...

Audio taper pots compensate for this, and give you a consistent volume change throughout the sweep. A tone control, on the other hand, works best with a linear taper pot. The role of a tone control is to feed part of your signal to a capacitor that bleeds the treble to ground.

Aug 2, 2013. #4. Linear simply means there is a steady ramp from 0-10 and are frequently used on tone controls. Audio taper has a different curve, more like 70/30. 70% of the ramp occurs between 5-10 on the turn. 0-5 covers the other 30%.

Audio log or linear taper tone pots? - Seymour Duncan User ...

Re: Audio log or linear taper tone pots? There's no difference when they are all the way up. Generally speaking, you use log taper for volume, linear for tone. Th differnce is subtle. Log taper pots produce a more uniform reduction in perceived volume while linears may show a more pronounced drop in one half of the pots sweep.
