The trick lies in designing appropriate filters for different audio frequency bands to control the brightness of the LEDs. In the above schematic, the LINE IN signal (X1) comes from an audio/music player. The first op-amp (IC1A) inside the LM324 (IC1) is a simple amplifier with an adjustable gain of about 1 to 6.

sudo git clone https://github.com/naztronaut/dancyPi-audio-reactive-led.git cd dancyPi-audio-reactive-led/python/install. Once you're in the install/ directory, you'll see a few files. The one we're intersted in is install.py. Running this script should install ALL the dependencies that you'll need for this project.

First it needs a current limiting resistor in series with the LEDs. Something like 150 Ω will probably do. Next, the transistor needs at least 0.7 V to conduct, which you may not have if you use a line output. If you do get the LEDs on, then add a 1 kΩ resistor in the red wire connection. (They seem to have never heard of resistors.)
