This kind man has written a little bit of software that lets you use external USB soundcards with Mac OS X. The G5 Toslink optical output supports 5.1 surround via MIDI setup in the Utilities folder. The sound card isn't needed except to use the speakers. Trouble is, that product only has Windows software.
