Set your pc's system sound settings to use 2.0 stereo, meaning NOT 5.1 or 7.1 or any surround settings. Skyrim doesn't do well with a lot of surround settings. If you don't like the new (hopefully much louder) sound, you can always switch back to the surround version if you prefer. Usually switching to two channel stereo fixes that.

Here's my fix, it may will fix it for u too. Sound settings -> your sound device -> prioertues - disable audio enhancement + and/or - other format, like dvd quality - disable the "exclusive mode" (it allows the app/game to take control of your audio settings)

Basically, the sound will cut out during gameplay. Usually its after playing for a little bit, maybe 15-30 minutes, then all the sound cuts out, everything is mute. The only way to fix it is to exit Skyrim, unplug my speakers, replug them back in, and restart Skyrim. As you can see, its quite frustrating >.<
