I have done some CD album scanning myself and actually am starting a new batch now. This is my workflow, which may be helpful. Scan at 1200dpi. The more detail the better. You can always shrink down, but never expand up. Straighten and crop. Use a horizontal guide in Ps to make sure it's straight. Descreen using the Sattva descreen filter.
