Diy attenuated rca cable - General Forum - Audiophile Style

The plan is to diy a resistor into the rca jack myself. I was hoping it would sound better attenuated in the cable as I don't particularly like digital volume control and notice that attenuating via the dac doesnt quite sound as good. But as you both suggest it's probably the lesser of two evils. Or I could just leave it and be happy as it is.

There are very simple gadgets that can be used for audio purposes with great results. These are passive attenuators. They are very simple objects based on a resistive partition housed in male-female RCA connectors and can be used in particular when there are differences in sensivity between the source (CD player, preamp, etc.) and the amplifier.

DIY Stepped Attenuator – audio at home

The shunt type attenuator is a potential divider whose first resistor has a constant value (most often 100kΩ) whereas the second, across which the voltage drop driving the amp develops, is switchable. I decided to go that way for its simplicity and the fact that Audio Note employs the same type in their higher level preamps.
