    Good thread, there are other forums (Audio Aficionado) with a very dedicated McIntosh following. I have always thought about investing in a McIntosh amp. I don't expect better sound, but the engineering, reliability and long-term value retention are second to none. As the Audio Critic says, in a McIntosh you can see what you are paying for.

    If you want more info, go to the audio aficionado forum. Preamps like the Ref 6/ SE are average preamps among members… there are lots of discussions on the two. The consensus is definitely worth it.

    I upgraded from the Ref 5SE to Ref 6SE… so I cannot address directly. But no drop in midrange bloom or additional “solid state” like sound. The 6SE is an outstanding preamp. Reviews of direct comparison are all very positive. Check out the audio aficionado forum. This level of components is average there.
