640 kbps is the maximum bitrate allowed in the Dolby Digital specification. On the other hand, the DVD specification doesn't allow for more than 448 kbps. I can only imagine that they're packaging it as if it were a half-bitrate dts track, or something, which makes no sense, but would require a "compatibility" audio track.

However, I thought that DD at 640 kbps and DD+ at 640 kbps are two entirely different encoding processes. DD using a constant bitrate method and DD+ uses a variable bitrate method. Since DD+ increases its bitrate when the sountrack demands it, it would appear to be technically superior.

Most of my 16/44.1 FLAC files rip at something close to 800ish kbps. Occassionally I'll see something rip up into the 900's, and I have a few up over 1000, just like I also have a few that are down in the 600's and even below 600 kbps... but 825ish kbps seems to be pretty standard in my experience. And storage space is so cheap anymore.
