I have an Audi A3 S-Line 8V with the standard system and previously had an A4 which comes with the Audi Sound System (bass speaker etc.) as standard. I would defiantly recommend the upgrade as I do miss the quality of the system in the A4. I find the standard system in the A3 rather disappointing in comparison and wish I had upgraded.

Sound System Upgrade from standard to ASS or B&O

Audi runs one pair of wires with a full range signal to each door and then split the cable. I imagine that the wiring from the back of the head unit in the standard system and the ASS is the same for the speakers. The only difference would probably be the center channel and subwoofer wiring. But I'm not familiar with the standard 8 speaker system.
