The DVI -> HDMI cable is not designed to carry audio. The DVI spec doesn't cater for it. The DVI->HDMI dongle from ATI is designed to take the audio that is fed into their DVI out on the graphic cards and convert it into a form that the HDMI cable will carry and treat as a proper HDMI audio/visual source.

I've ran an HDMI 1.3 cable from my PC with an ATI Radeon HD 4870 (OEM DVI to HDMI adapter) through my Sony STR-DG720 into my Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080. The video is coming through fine at 1080p, but the audio will only playback in stereo. I've selected the "Digital Output Device (HDMI)" on my PC's playback devices page.
