AIUI the 3xxx series, if they provide HDMI audio (as the HD 3200 on-board stuff does) only provide it in SPDIF format streamed over HDMI. This supports a maximum data rate of around 1.5Mbs - enough for 2 channel PCM, or Dolby Digital/DTS streaming - but no more. It is the ATI chipset that limits the audio to SPDIF not the connector standards.
