Here's the theory: DVI and HDMI carry the same digital video signal, & HDMI can carry an audio signal too. There are some unused pins on the DVI connection. ATI uses these pins to transmit the audio.

Sure, it's been a standard feature of ATI cards since the HD 2900 XT, but it required a special DVI -> HDMI dongle capable of passing through the audio.
