    I solved this by going to the ASIO4ALL dialog box, expanding the Realtek High Definition Audio node (click the + next to it) and noted that the audio outputs weren't correct for my setup (looks like it picked up the first input and the first output, but none of the outputs were the rights ones in my case).

    He's right, tho the english is bad -- right-click on the speaker icon, open up PLAYBACK DEVICES (not RECORDING DEVICES) and DISABLE the speakers -- then go to the ASIO4ALL panel, disable then re-enable Realtek HD Audio Output and the red x should go away, and you should be able to hear sound now.
