Check that your default sound device in Windows is set to your sound card. You may find that if you've plugged in to an HDTV via HDMI it will be trying to use that as a sound device instead. If you're using a USB headset, it may be causing the issue too. Make sure that you have any manufacturer recommended drivers if you do.
