    You should leave the Apple TV audio format setting on "Auto". As I found out recently, by manually setting it to "Dolby Digital 5.1" you are telling the Apple TV to convert all audio to 5.1 before outputting it. That's how your Receiver is getting surround sound from an app that only outputs stereo.
