Playing a 24bit /96kHz ALAC (m4a) file via Plex Media Server running on a Synology Diskstation to the Apple TV4 shows up as 48 kHz on the pre-amp. I had read at a few places online that if Plex feeds the ATV4 an ALAC (as opposed to a FLAC) audio file that Plex would indeed send 24/96 because the Apple TV4 would accept an ALAC bit for bit.

Can't answer definitively, but looking at the Apple TV2 tech specs on Apple's website, it says that ATV2 supports "...AIFF, Apple Lossless, Dolby 5.1 pass through" As I understand, AIFF will allow 24/96 audio, so if the ATV2 spec is literally correct, it should pass it through. It definitely passes Dolby 5.1 through un-molested.

Now that it's been a good while since Apple discovered HiFI, when will the Apple TV pass 24/96 audio through to the HDMI output? Many users have hi-res audio in their iTunes data sets and would like to be able to hear the music in full resolution via their Apple TV. But Apple Lossless is 24/48 currently for Apple TV 4K (hi res is 192, but dont offer it for Apple TV 4K yet), and my question persists, seems my Apple TV HD doesn´t have even the options the 4K version has. I am happy with 24/48, but seems the HD version is not getting EVEN that.
