But all the options in Windows are for stereo 2.0 output only - all the options for 5.1 or greater output are greyed out. It insists I only have access to two speakers. I have a gigabyte mobo with onboard Realtek audio AL889A. This machine is used as a Media Center pc connected thru a Yamaha RX-V667. Everything worked great until I had a harddrive crash. Repalced drive and now can only set ATI HDMI audio to stereo. I've seen plenty of threads on this issue but no real solutions.

If it only shows Stereo than you need to update the Audio driver, but your GPU is considered legacy not supported by AMD with updated drivers. If you have your 5.1 Audio Device connected to the AMD GPU, then AMD will provide the Audio drivers. If it connected to the motherboard, then the Motherboard's Audio driver are the one powering your 5.1 audio.

ATI Radeon HD 4550 & HDMI : only stereo (with radeonhd) !!! 11 March 2010, 09:59 AM. Hello, I have an ATI Radeon HD 4550 on my Debian computer (with radeonhd driver). The card is linked to my audio-video amplifier through HDMI. Video is OK and sound is "quite" OK. But, it seems the audio signal is downgraded to stereo (even DD or DTS flow).

I'm guessing the AMD driver is for the HDMI output on your video card, which can also carry audio. As this is digital, I wouldn't expect a stereo mix here either. Your best bet for a stereo mix is to download the Realtek HD audio driver and install it on the HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC device.
