The nvidia control panel does recognize my TV as an option that should show up in Windows sound, but all I see is the default device, "Speakers", Realtek HD High Definition Audio. Unfortunately, this is not working with the 9600GT. I believe it is because this new card wants to take SPDIF input from the sound card and then couple it with the DVI video output. Inspite of the fact that DVI isn't supposed to carry audio, the card may be sneakily inserting the audio signal in between video signals.

Agreed. 9600GT series doesn't an onboard audio card, it needed an sperate soundcard to handle the processing which was buggy at the best of times. It was the main reason ATI was such a big hit for HTPC users as it was first to adopt proper HDMI with video and HD audio through a stadardised cable.

HDMI will support audio but only if it doesn't pass through a DVI connection first. It sounds like you need to run a separate cable for the audio to me. the 9600 GT cards don't support audio as far as i know since they don't have HDMI support.
