I tried unplugging the HDMI cable form the TV and the sound came back on. It seems to me for some reason the TV thinks the 8800GT is outputting audio and is hence muting the 3.5mm input. To make matters worse the TV doesn't have an option to force the use of the 3.5mm input so I'm stuck with blank HDMI audio coming from the 8800 GT.

I have plugged hdmi cable from pc to tv and picture is fine. In nvidia control panel there is a setup digital audio option it detects my vga caed and i can select sound turn off or LG tv. so there is a bright spot at the end of the tunnel. In sound/playback only speaker and spdif out appears. i have checked disabled and disconnected devices.

edit: some G92 cards dont work either, my first gen 8800GT wont work with SPDIF audio, it was a known bug at the time of launch fixed with 9800GT's. edit 2: and you definitely need an DVI to HDMI adaptor, cant use straight DVI. not all adaptors will pass audio either, so try more than one.
