If your GTS 8800 video card does not have an s/pdif input (some do, some don't), then I don't know of a way to get audio over hdmi. You may be able to find some kind of external converter box that could take the spdif output from your motherboard and combine it with a video signal from your card and give you an hdmi port with audio. .

I tried unplugging the HDMI cable form the TV and the sound came back on. It seems to me for some reason the TV thinks the 8800GT is outputting audio and is hence muting the 3.5mm input. To make matters worse the TV doesn't have an option to force the use of the 3.5mm input so I'm stuck with blank HDMI audio coming from the 8800 GT.

I have plugged hdmi cable from pc to tv and picture is fine. In nvidia control panel there is a setup digital audio option it detects my vga caed and i can select sound turn off or LG tv. so there is a bright spot at the end of the tunnel.
