Audio from DVI on 4850 | TechPowerUp Forums

The reasoning is taht DVI doesnt support audio, so a few tricks had to be done out of spec to make the audio work - the generic adaptors support 5.1 audio, but since the ATI 3K and up cards support 7.1 audio, they need a newer adaptor (which pretty much only ATI supply) they're <$10 on ebay so its not a large expense.

Ok guys I don't know if this is a dumb question or what but here we go. I have the XFX HD4850 and it is suppose to support audio through the DVI ports on back. I have tried everything to get this to work. I don't know if it is the cable that isn't supporting the audio or what. Do I need that...

The GPU I was going to put in her next build is a 4850 which has DVI but no HDMI. Many years ago I had a 4850 of a different brand that had a DVI - HDMI adapter that included audio. I'd like to pick up something like that for her but want to make sure that whatever I get includes the audio stream.

      4850: HDMI "via Adapter"???? | [H]ard|Forum

        https://hardforum.com/threads/4850-hdmi-via-adapter.1331480/
I had this same issue with the 4850 on my 24" monitor with HDMI input. The answer is the special ATI DVI-HDMI adapter, which seems to carry an audio signal at the expense of color range, thus making the picture more grainy. I switched to a standard DVI-HDMI cable, since I don't use the monitor's speakers, and it's crystal clear now.

Right, Hooked up my ATI 4850 to the Onkyo 606 and can only get Stereo sound from the speakers - 5.1 or 7.1 won't show up in the Realtek Audio control panel This is what I've done so far: Plugged HDMI cable and official ATI DVI > HDMI adapter into port 1 on 4850 card. Installed latest Realtek Drivers (2.14) for Vista64.

Some AMD cards support audio from the DVI port through a specific adapter, like I mentioned in my OP. The 4850 is specced at supporting 7.1 HDMI audio despite having no HDMI port and including a DVI to HDMI adapter. Trust me it works gave it to my dad and he still uses it.
